Scotland woman struck by vehicle, killed

— A 54-year-old Scotland woman was killed when she was struck by a pickup truck before dawn Thursday.

Lois Luig was walking with a companion on FM 172 about three miles west of Scotland when the accident happened at 6 a.m.

Sgt. Toby Catlin of the Texas Department of Public Safety said two women were walking in the northbound lanes. The 1992 Dodge Dakota pickup topped a hill and struck Luig.

Catlin said the driver, Kenneth Berend, 61, of Windthorst, saw the women and hit the brakes put could not stop in time to avoid striking Luig. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Her walking companion, Kim Hemmi of Scotland, was not injured.

Catlin said no charges will be filed in the case.
