JACKSBORO — The Burkburnett Bulldogs scored 81 points Tuesday night and weren’t pleased with their offensive flow.

That shows the No. 16 Bulldogs played a lot of defense to stamp out any chance of a Mineral Wells’ upset bid.

Burkburnett started slow but outscored the Rams 51-31 in the middle two quarters to pull away for an 81-59 Region I-3A Bi-District victory at Jacksboro High School.

Mineral Wells (17-17) was held to 34 percent shooting and leading scorer Dashawn Hicks needed 24 field-goal attempts and eight tries at the line to net his 21 points.

“I was really proud of our guys for the way they hung in,” Burkburnett coach Danny Nix said. “We had kind of a sloppy offensive night but boy we had a very good defensive and rebounding night. We’re really tickled with that.”

Burkburnett trailed 12-6 in the first quarter and 12-9 when the period was over but blitzed the Rams with a 27-point second quarter to lead 36-26 at intermission.

For good measure the Bulldogs came out aggressive defensively in the third quarter and they quickly built the lead to 22 at 51-29 on a 15-footer by Elijah Strickland.

Strickland had his usual steady night offensively with 23 points and added 10 rebounds, eight on the defensive end.

Burk’s Chavaz Jackson made four 3-pointers and his last seven free throws of the night to lead everyone with 25 points. He added three assists. Justin Bell added 13 points and 11 rebounds, while Arthur Hamlett had eight points and five assists.

Bell was also a key to the defense, jumping the passing lane for four steals. Strickland had three and Cameron Cahayla had three blocks in one stint and then seemed to affect another shot underneath after he’d checked out of the game. Matt Everson and Kennedy Shelby also had blocks.

“We played some really good defense and controlled the boards in the third quarter,” Nix added. “They really pressured hard and got after us (with their defense). We weren’t good receivers and we’re better ballhandlers than that. We’ll work on it. We’ll sure see (pressure) in the next round.”

Mineral Wells had scored an overtime upset over Burk in this round last year. The Bulldogs took the suspense out of this one with their defense.

Burkburnett will face No. 14 Liberty Hill (30-4) in the Area round Friday at Burleson.
