Ron Moyne, Wichita Falls
The Dream Act, pending in Congress, creates a path to legal immigration status for undocumented immigrants born outside the United States and who were brought here illegally as children.
In many cases those kids are unaware of their status until they graduate from high school and attempt to apply for college. Though the United States is the only home they have ever known, they live in fear of deportation.
Although, nobody in my family falls into that category, one can’t help but sympathize with the plight of those young people who do. There is negative misinformation circulating on TV and radio talk shows about this. The word amnesty gets used a lot. It does not award amnesty at all. No one automatically receives a green card.
To apply for legal status individuals have to meet stringent eligibility criteria. They must have no criminal records, graduate from high school; and complete at least two years of college or military service.
Politics once again prevails over common sense. Politicians in both parties refuse to pass the legislation. They decided that it is better to hurt those kids to advance their own political agendas. I don’t condone illegal immigration whatsoever. However, since this country’s beginning, people gave up everything, including their lives, for the American dream. The parents were legally wrong, but sacrificed all for the lives of their children.
When my grandfather entered the harbor on a ship from Italy, he saw the Statue of Liberty as he made his way to Ellis Island. On a bronze plaque mounted inside the pedestal was a sonnet written by Emma Lazarus.
It read in part, “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me; I lift my lamp beside the golden door!” It was that attitude that made America great.
We need to throw off the shackles imposed upon us by politicians, and show the rest of the world who we really are — and to give those innocent kids a chance to contribute to our greatness.

Where does it end, then, Ron? Or is it just open-ended...For the rest of eternity, if an illegal immigrant can make it across the border with his/her kid, they're good to go? Or if they can sneak in, have a kid (paid for by the US taxpayers), they're in like Flynn?
No, Ron. This isn't the United States circa 1900. Things are different now.

Agreed. There has to be limits on who can enter. Granted, the laws could be made easier on those who choose to immigrate legally. Why don't the politicians concentrate on making immigration easier? They still need to keep our borders safe. I find it extremely hypocritical that Democrats screamed bloody murder when the same amnesty was proposed during Bush's term. Yet the minute his o'liness could gather some votes because of it was the grandest idea ever. I wasn't in favor of it during Bush's term either.

I'll do you one better, Ron. I sympathize with anyone who is not blessed with being a citizen of the United States. Why do you sympathize with only the ones who flaunt our laws? I wish that all countries had our Constitution and were allowed to enjoy the God given freedoms we once had. We cannot save everybody from tyrannical governments.

That's the beauty of America, everyone is entitled to their own opinion. If I'm not mistaken (which I am sure you masters of wisdom will point out) Gov. Rick Perry wanted this to happen and he fully backed the Dream Act while running for the presidency. Then he changed his mind abruptly when chastised by his opponents in the primaries. In other words he was for it before he was against it! :) Remember that came from the same man who suggested that Texas leave the Union that he wanted to be president of. If the GOP doesn't get it's head out of it's rear end soon, the state of Texas will go blue before they figure out what happened.

Your almost there, I think weve had it even after the King leaves.

If what you say is true...then why did we go to Iraq and Afghanistan? Un paid for and unnecessary!

Im thinking we went over there because them cowardly Muslim terrorist came over here and ran planes into our WTC.
But, to yall liberals, thats not enough.
As the saying goes, "you kill us, were gonna kill you back."

Bush promised us Bin Laden...Obama delivered. Bush took us to Iraq for no reason and screwed up the economy. Get yourself informed before you run your mouth.

I challenge any of you against the Dream Act to come up with a credible plan to oust the illegals. However, your elected officials, supposedly intelligent people, have been unable to come up with a plan. Does Washington not know about the experts here in Texhomaland?
They have simplistic answers to complex issues. Seems everyday the same batch of know it alls readily offers the answers to all our problems, and Washington just won't listen! Oh well.....That's government for you!

It kind of reminds me of a RoadRunner cartoon. Wiley know-it-all Coyote always goes after the road runner and always destroys himself. :) You are right one hundred percent. That same bunch of know it alls are here every day and belittle everything said no matter what the subject. Ron Moyne was spot on with his letter about the Dream Act. It is complicated, but at least Obama is starting someplace. However, the mouth pieces that lurk here will never be content with anything.

BTW oh enlightened one, the Navy Seals as do all the military work for the Commander-in-Chief. Their orders to go in and take out Bin Laden came directly from the president. I'm quite sure even a gallon of coffee couldn't possibly help you to understand simple concepts.

It seems that other "industrialised" nations do not have a problem keeping out those who wish to enter their lands illegally so why is it the USA can"t? Perhaps due to our size(each state as large as many countries) and the governments micro management, being unwilling to allow each state to enforce immigration laws that are already on the books. What is wrong with demanding proof of who you are whenever asked? I do it daily just to use a personal check or gain access to certain areas. If States were required/allowed to enforce existing laws perhaps then we would have less of a problem.
Freethinker writes:
Agreed. Lots of other countries guard their borders and enforce stiff penalties for violation. However, demanding proof of who you are if you've done nothing wrong is a violation of our 4th amendment rights. I'm kinda tired of losing my constitutional liberties every time the idiots in DC invent new ways of keeping us "safe."

The Fourth Amendment (Amendment IV) to the United States Constitution is the part of the Bill of Rights which guards against unreasonable searches and seizures, along with requiring any warrant to be judicially sanctioned and supported by probable cause. It was adopted as a response to the abuse of the writ of assistance, which is a type of general search warrant, in the American Revolution. Search and seizure (including arrest) should be limited in scope according to specific information supplied to the issuing court, usually by a law enforcement officer, who has sworn by it. The Fourth Amendment applies to the states by way of the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment.
The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.[1]
This amendment has nothing to do with showing proof of who you are when asked by, say, an officer of the law. Even bank tellers demand proof prior to cashing checks or making withdrawals, you must show proof when entering certain clubs or even when obtaining a driver's permit. Showing your ID is far from "search and seizure" and is NOT unreasonable.
