Holliday's road comes to end in OT loss to Tolar

SPRINGTOWN — Tolar running back Cory Solomon powered across the goal line for a 17-yard touchdown in overtime as Tolar eliminated Holliday 23-20 in their Class 2A Division II football playoff game Friday night at Porcupine Stadium.

Holliday (6-5) had taken the lead in OT on Hunter McCain's 25-yard field goal, and Tolar was faced with fourth-and-2 when Solomon's scoring run ended the Eagles' season. Tolar advanced to play 9-1 Gunter at 2 p.m. Friday in Saginaw.

Starting quarterback Jacob Cole suffered a calf injury in the first series and was sidelined the rest of the night. But Brennan Whitaker threw for 158 yards and one TD.

"It's what I've liked all year — this group of kids leaves it on the field," Holliday head coach Cody Patton said. "They just go out and go full throttle. All you can ask is have a group of senior kids to throw it on the line for you every play."

The game was scoreless in the fourth quarter, after a 10-10 halftime tie and Sam Shirley's 8-yard TD run in the third quarter that knotted the score again, 17-all

Tolar capped a seven-play, 75-yard drive on its first possession with a 2-yard touchdown run by quarterback Corbin Wood as the Rattlers gained a 7-0 edge.

Holliday got on the scoreboard on its third possession with a 33-yard field goal by Hunter McCain, pulling the Eagles within 7-3 with 2:34 remaining in the opening quarter.

The Eagles took the lead, 10-7, when Brennan Whitaker tossed a 16-yard TD pass to Andrew Edgin to the left side in the end zone with 11 minutes to go in the half.

The key play in the seven-play, 69-yard drive was Whitaker's 33-yard completion to Beau Hadderton.

Tolar's starting quarterback, Corbin Wood, was back to punt late in the second quarter when the snap hit the up back and rolled toward Wood. He picked it up and threw a pass to Garrett Winston for a 16-yard gain and a first down.

Four snaps later Cory Solomon uncorked a big 22-yard run and managed to get out of bounds with only 5 seconds left before intermission. On the next play, Tolar's B.J. Dollins kicked a 21-yard field goal to level the score at 10 at the half.
