SNYDER — Entering Saturday's Six-Man Divison I state semifinal, Throckmorton coach Mike Reed had all but placed a bull's-eye on Turkey Valley running back Kameron Buchanan.

Buchanan, who entered the game with more than 2,100 yards rushing, had to be contained if Reed's Greyhounds were to advance to their third straight state championship game.

The result: Buchanan was held to an uncharacteristic 66 rushing yards and no touchdowns in Throckmorton's come-from-behind 60-48 win.

Bryson Oliver threw for 320 yards and four scores to lead Throckmorton (12-1), which now advances to face Abbott in the state championship at 7 p.m. Saturday at Abilene's Shotwell Stadium.

Trailing 24-14 after the first quarter, Throckmorton turned to its defense, which halted six straight Valley drives to enable the defending state champions to gain a permanent upper hand.

Valley, which was led by Carson Proctor's 112 yards receiving and three scores, finished at 12-2.

"Our defense, without a doubt, has been one of our staples all year," Reed said. "Offensively, we do a lot of good things, but our defense has always been something we can hang our hat on when things get tight."

Throckmorton used a 24-0 second quarter to get the lead for good — a 10-minute stretch that saw touchdown runs by Trinity Haggard of 10 and 46 yards to go with a 14-yard TD pass from Oliver to Nathan Riley at the 0:23 mark.

"We started off really well — about as well as could have dreamed of," Valley coach Bret Tyler said. "I can't explain why we quit scoring, and they scored a few to take the lead.

"The second quarter was obviously the difference in the game."

Valley's sudden drop-off in production proved fatal.

The Patriots first got on the board at the 8:17 mark of the first quarter on a 6-yard run by Ashton Barclay. Valley later took a 16-14 lead on a 12-yard pass from Buchanan to Cody Heck with 5:06 left in the first quarter.

The Patriots then expanded that lead to 24-14 when Ketch Smith found Procter with a 34-yard touchdown pass with 3:24 left in the first.

From that point forward, however, Valley was blanked for more than 23 straight minutes, and trailed 54-24 after third-quarter touchdown passes from Oliver to Levi Taylor and Gary Farquhar.

The corralling of Buchanan, who had scored 46 touchdowns on the year, was certainly a key.

"Anytime you start talking about outstanding running backs, Buchanan's name always comes up," Reed said. "At all times we had someone assigned to him who couldn't leave him."

Valley did managed to stage a rally of sorts, with a 24-6 final period.

Throckmorton added its final score of the game with a 31-yard touchdown pass from Oliver to Haggard with 7:54 left in the game, essentially putting things out of reach.

The Patriots then tallied a pair of late scores — a 30-yard touchdown run by Barclay with 7:13 to play and a 34-yard deflected touchdown pass from Smith to Proctor at the 0:31 mark.

"We just had a lull in the middle of the game," Tyler said. "You can't fall behind a team like Throckmorton.

"They're very talented and they're too good to play catch-up with. ... We needed to keep a little lead to have a chance at the end. Because they're a great team, do doubt."
