Greyhounds rout Rankin

SNYDER — The nation's top-ranked six-man football team — as rated by — and defending state champion Throckmorton Greyhounds played up to their hype Saturday night at Snyder's Tiger Stadium, routing No. 3 Rankin 88-58 to advance to next week's state semifinal.

"I think our kids are on a mission," Greyhounds coach Mike Reed said. "They understand the expectations, and after getting a taste of a state title last year they don't want to let that go."

Although the Throckmorton offense sputtered late in the game — twice failing to score touchdowns with a chance to invoke the 45-point rule — the Greyhounds defense and special teams thwarted the Red Devils by capitalizing on turnovers. Throckmorton also recovered two Rankin onside kick attempts and returned both for touchdowns.

Gary Farquhar initiated the scoring onslaught for the Greyhounds, scoring their first two touchdowns of the contest — both in the first quarter. His 47-yard catch for a score with 4:47 left in the opening quarter gave Throckmorton an early lead they wouldn't surrender. The senior receiver accounted for 152 yards on six catches.

While the Greyhounds' defense bottled Rankin's passing attack, holding the Red Devils' Dalton Michum to just 110 yards through the air, Throckmorton had difficulty stopping the signal caller's legs. Michum amassed 300 yards rushing and ran for four scores.

Trinity Haggard broke on one of the Red Devils' onside kick attempts at midfield and dashed the distance for a 50-yard touchdown that gave the Greyhounds a 64-36 lead with 3:35 left in the third quarter.

A minute and a half later, after a successful onside kick and quick touchdown by Throckmorton, the Greyhounds recovered another onside attempt and Haggard capped that scoring drive with a 2-yard run that had his team entering the game's final quarter with a 44-point lead.

Rankin refused to let the game end early, though, avoiding a mercy-rule loss.

"Our hats are absolutely off to them," Reed said. "They're a great team. They never gave in once. Playing Saturday in early December is not easy, so we just need to start out next week like we did this week and get ready and go."

Throckmorton will play Turkey Valley at 6 p.m. Saturday at in Snyder.
